Creatives Series – Markiki Jones

Today we are excited to start a new series called #FeatureFriday where we showcase an up-and-coming artist and their work. Our first guest is Markiki Jones, who we met while filming our #ChicagoPride video. The following is an interview we conducted with Markiki so if you want to learn more about them and their work, please check out their Instagram and Youtube.

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Markiki Jones and I am a drag performer! I am also a dancer and a martial artist.

Why do you do what you do?

Drag gives me a place where I feel the most free, the most beautiful, and the most confident. When I am in drag and when I am performing, I feel like I’m continually evolving myself through my art.

What is an experience that has left a mark on you as an artist?

My very first drag competition was an experience that truly made a huge mark on me. I won crowd favorite in the whole competition, and it was the first time I ever performed in drag in front of an audience.

What is art to you?

Art to me is a way of communication. Every piece of art conveys different emotions, purposes, and messages, and everyone has different interpretations of it. I also believe art is a way to bring the universe to life, and that can be used to bring the best in people.

Who are your biggest influences?

Lady Gaga and Ru Paul.

How much of your art is based on real experiences?

I would say most of it! I believe my art is my interpretation of the beauty and grace of the universe, and I try to embody that into my art.

How do you keep yourself motivated and interested in your work?

I’ve always had a passion for creating and expressing myself. The constant need to create and convey my feelings always keeps me motivated.

Where do you see yourself going with your art in the future?

I want to spread my art to as many people as possible, and I want to use my art to spread love and positivity to the world. I feel like art is a great way to bring people together, and I want to use my art to make people realize their worth.

What is your dream project?

To make a music video! A lot of my drag is inspired by music videos, and it would be a dream to create a Markiki music video!

What is the best advice that you have been given?

The best advice I ever gotten was actually something I realized for myself. We are products of the universe, and just like the universe we never stop growing. So I try to dedicate everyday to better myself and to evolve myself. Humans don’t give themselves enough credit, we are all so much more capable that what we think, and we are filled with unlimited potential. We are all children of the universe, and the fact that we exists in this amazing universe is a blessing!
